Lawrence on I Am Legend Prequel
Francis Lawrence talked recently about the I Am Legend prequel currently being scripted by D.B. Weiss. The director of 2007′s I Am Legend tells Sci-Fi Wire that the “bones” of the story are being hammered out and if the script is solid, he’ll be back to direct.
“I have my beliefs on what was interesting about the first story and what was not so interesting about the first story, and I think that to go back, there has to be a truly viable reason to go back into that world that I think interested everybody, so that’s the real struggle,” Lawrence tells the site. “The struggle is to find a story that brings us back in a way that’s hopefully just as interesting as the first time around.”
The prequel will find Will Smith reprises his role as Robert Neville and is said to follow the events during the viral outbreak and the fall of New York City.
Walas Giving Birth to Baby Zombies?
Two special effects vets are cooking up new films at Wiseacre Films.
Chris Walas, who’s been absent from the scene, is in line to direct Baby Zombies. The film recently popped up as a new listing on the IMDBPro which made us dig a bit further until we found this page which sports artwork and some more details. Walas last directed The Vagrant (remember the video box with a screaming Bill Paxton?) in ’92 and before that, the underrated The Fly II.
According to the Wiseacre site, he’s nurturing Baby Zombies with Ethan Wiley (House, House II: The Second Story). Here’s the rub: The listing on the site says the film begins production in April…of 2008. Yet, on the site’s news page, it says it will go into production this year. Either way, we’ll keep an eye on the film’s movements.
Also at Wiseacre are details about Randy Cook’s The Quarry. Now Cook, as we told you here, parted ways with a remake to The Gate last year. Again, Wiley is co-producing and writing, with Cook at the helm. The story concerns three slackers attempting to kill an aquatic creature in an abandoned quarry.
Living Arrangements Trailer
The quirky crew behind Wolfie Productions alerted us this morning to the trailer you see below for the indie horror-comedy Living Arrangements. Minneapolis-based Sam Thompson directed this feature which was penned by Tucker Dryden. It follows a vegan couple whose cutesy life is disturbed by the discovery of a lycanthrope living in their attic. And as you’ll see in the trailer they, at first, try to co-exist with this hirsute problem but things go terribly awry.

Bled comes to DVD on April 7th
Christoper Hutson’s horror film Bled comes to DVD on April 7th. You might recall we introduced this title to you during our AFM coverage last year.
Here’s the synopsis: Sai, a hip, young, new age artist living in a downtown warehouse, delves into an elusive fantasy world of the unknown. An enigmatic and handsome man seduces her to try an ancient drug that, unbeknownst to her, will make her the prey of a vampire from a dark dimension. He takes advantage of her newfound addiction and uses it to cross over from his world into hers.
Bled features the film debut of Ivan L. Moody, the vocalist of music band Five Finger Death Punch. Cover art is coming soon.
The Birth of Peter Kwong’s Hybrid
Surveying the landscape of cinema, one has to wonder why man doesn’t just stay the hell out of the water. “Shrinkage” from the cold temperatures aside, there’s plenty to be afraid of. Who wants to take a dip when there are smart-ass sharks (Jaws, Deep Blue Sea), cranky mutant crustaceans (Deep Star Six), feisty fish (Piranha, Finding Nemo) and other unidentified creatures lurking in our oceans (Leviathan, Deep Rising)? Beats us, but those suckers who choose to risk their lives at sea are repeatedly the subjects of some entertaining horror films. The latest is Hybrid, shooting this year under the direction of Ernie Barbarash (Stir of Echoes 2) for Myriad Pictures and Studio 407. Not to be confused with the killer car movie of the same name, this beast springs from the mind of writer Peter Kwong who filled us in on Hybrid’s journey to the screen and detour to the comic book medium.
RIP Monsters HD 2003 – 2009
When the Dish Network dropped all channels owned by VOOM last year, Monsters HD took a hard hit as did its fans. Nearly a year later, the beloved horror channel is being buried six feet under. This message appeared on the channel’s official site.
“TV’s first and longest-running hi-def horror and creature feature channel will cease operations and mad experiments this month. Thanks for all the screams and support over the years. Fear not – monsters never die…they always come back!”
Our condolences to those who use to work at Monsters HD. It’s still a shame the horror community does not have a wide-reaching channel to tune in to…
