KEVIN SMITH SPILLS THE BLOOD ABOUT HIS UPCOMING HORROR FILM ‘RED STATE’
Smith’s next project is set to start production in 2009 — and it has a political edge.
LOCATION: The View Askewniverse
THE SKINNY: Everyone knows about Kevin Smith’s comedy ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO that’s coming out this Friday, so iF Magazine launched an investigation into the mysterious horror film that Smith has coming up on his slate.
So far, not much is known about RED STATE, besides the fact that it’s inspired by a figure like extremist preacher Fred Phelps. Smith confirms that “it’s a flat out horror flick. It’s a 180 from the stuff we’ve done so far because everything has been comedically bent.”
With the upcoming elections, iF couldn’t resist asking the obvious question — if the film is about America with McCain as president. “I don’t know about that,” he says. “To me, after September 11, America turned to the enemy and forgot about the enemy within our own borders. That is what the movie concentrates on. It’s pretty far away from anything we’ve done. Not a laugh in it, just a straight out political horror film.”
Will RED STATE be the start of a shift from Smith’s signature comedic style? Not to worry, readers. The director assures that “No, for me right now it’s a one off. Its not like I’m saying I’m going to do this and then a courtroom drama. Right now I’ve got RED STATE down to a science and I feel confident to move forward. After that, I don’t know, I would imagine I’ll do a comedy again.”
Unfortunately, Smith reveals that no actors have been lined up yet: ” I have to find money first. It’s shocking how difficult it is to find money when you are like ‘I would like to make a horror movie.’ People are like ‘eh.’”
Of course, the master of the View Askewniverse is working on his other love as well, comic books. “I haven’t done one in about three years, but I’m working on a BATMAN arc for DC,” he reveals.
Smith also has a comic book movie that is “still stewing right now.” He says that the film will be starring “a character I’ve created and God willing, Seth [Rogen] plays.”
If ZACK AND MIRI is any indication, the projects that the pair produces together are worth the wait.
