Wolfenstein Game Sequel & Movie Update

If you haven’t been to your local newstand yet (or if you don’t live in North America), you’ve probably haven’t seen the eye-catching cover art for the new issue of Game Informer. Plastered most wonderfully is the most recognizable title in gaming, Wolfenstein. But despite what you might think, this isn’t a reboot of the franchise. It is a sequel to the 2001 hit Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Picking up shortly after the last game, US Army Ranger BJ Blazkowitz finds himself taking another vacation in Europe. Though thwarting those nasty Nazis and their plans to resurrect an ancient evil, those goosestepping goons keep on trucking. Scientists have discovered a second dimension that overlaps our own and they have been able to draw an energy called “Black Sun” out of it. Of course this power can be used to destroy the Allies and help Hitler take over the world.

The player will be able to enter the other dimension (by the screenshots a greenish, shadowy world) and collect various powers they can use while in the dimension against their foes. Like in the first game, there are the conventional German soldiers along with super-soldiers with super cool weaponry and supernatural forces that hold no particular alliance. As well as the player will have allies to help them through some of the battles.

The game is being developed by Raven Software and Threewave Software and will be published by Activision. No word yet on when it will get released, but certainly it will be released on PC, XBOX360 and Playstation 3. I would be very surprised for a Wii version of the game.

In related news, Eurogamer got word that Roger Avary has begun to write the script for the long rumored film adaptation of Wolfenstein. Big reason for the delay is last year’s Writer’s strike as well as had another project to complete before writing this film. Last we reported, Avary was not only writing, but might possibly direct the film as well. The earliest rumor I can remember of a Wolfenstein film was back just before RtCW came out in 2001 with Rob (Mummy 3, XXX) Cohen directing.  After Mummy 3, I’d rather see Renny Harlin tackle a Wolfenstein film.  We’ll keep you updating as news of the film comes along. If done well, I think it could kick major ass…if not…we’ll have another Doom on our hands.
