Derek Mears Talks Friday the 13th At Comic Con

We got the opportunity to sit down with Derek Mears to talk about Friday the 13th at Comic Con this year. I have to honestly say this was the coolest guy we got a chance to speak with so far. He had some great stories and gave us some very good insight about the upcoming remake.. and not all of it is good.

Right off the bat he began talking about the script and what he says worries me a bit, “The way that Mark and Damian written the script there is a lot more levels to him (Jason). Where he is more of full fledged character and not just a guy running around in a hockey mask killing people. You can to one side where there is this child who is hurt and tormented and you can empathize with him with what he is going through. But then to switch that in a negative light on the other end where it becomes like this agressive and angry and takes that torment out. So you see almost where its coming from. You see that energy built up and then you see it released and I’m really excited about it. There is a lot more depth to the regular stereotypical slasher.”

Now for some people this may seem like a good thing. But for me I just want to see Jason with a machete and hacking people up. I don’t care why he is tormented or see an emo Jason. We already got a taste of that in Freddy vs Jason and it was pathetic. Now I have this real fear that it may end up the way Rob Zombie’s Halloween did and just turn Jason into a sad little emo kid.

But things got better as time went on during the interview which almost made me forget he said this was an intelligent script. Mears kept impressing upon us how big of a fan he was of the original films. So during different scenes he said he added different homages to different actors who have played Jason over time. Next he told a great story about the first time he put on the hockey mask.

“I went in to try the mask on for the first time, I actually was in Scott’s shop and he said, ‘Well hey man your in the room we don’t have anything ready but we have the masks here why don’t try one on.’  (unsure)’OK’. So he brings out this big case with six of the masks and then the polyfoam inside you know really super protected. Everyone in the shop, there was like people working on ya know broken legs, slit necks. Everyone is doing their own thing then they kind of stop and put all their work down and I feel everyone watching me. So I walk over and I say lets go for it. It’s kind of like this Excalibur moment putting on that mask. ‘Awwwww’. Like putting a crown on. The feeling I can describe it is that feeling when you watch Star Wars and you hear that ‘Bahhh” and you start to see the words scroll down and you get that chilll like ‘Awww’. Thats what it felt like.”

He was really a very funny guy and shared quite a bit of insight about the film and the character. Apparently this time around they also want Jason to be a bit more functional. Mears said to us that he asked if he should bulk up for the role and they said no. They wanted him to be a bit more mobile this time around. He also says that he didn’t get to see Nana Visitor very much. So I am guessing there won’t be really any scenes that include mother and son.

During the panel they revealed a look at the poster which basically is an all black poster with Jason’s mask and the date on the bottom. They also showed a clip from the film that you can read all about right here. Be sure to stick around guys because we are going to be keeping a close eye on this one and I am hoping for the best.
