Proyas Talks Knowing At Comic Con
During Comic Con we had a chance to sit down with director Alex Proyas who was on hand to promote his upcoming film The Knowing starring Nicolas Cage. He was having a bit of difficulty talking about the film because he started off by saying he had just finished shooting. So he didn’t have much time to reflect on the film before being asked many questions.
He really begins by talking about his love for Science Fiction and the climate of the times is always reflected within science fiction. Next he was fielded by a question that really seemed to strike a cord with him about studio interference, “I don’t need some schmuck in the studio saying to me, ‘Well what about this?’ I’m doing it already! Just leave me the fu.. Leave me the whatever alone to do my job. And thats really the key you know. The smart people and the smart studios understand that and.. As long as you not going over budget and your not going insane or something and they are seeing really good stuff. They let you do your stuff and thats all any director can ask for.”
Then Proyas began to talk about the scene from the trailer in which Nicolas Cage looks up to see the plane coming down. After that moment in the trailer, “He runs into the field and he sees all those people on fire and stuff and its one continous three minute shot. It took us two days to set up and two days to shoot.”
Next he went on to talk about the new DVD coming out for Dark City. He was really pleased to be able to put out the version of the film that he wanted. Proyas wanted to be sure not to piss off fans of the original film but still be able to deliver the film he had in mind the whole time. From there he began talking about HD and how great it was to be able to transfer the film into the format. Which brought up the whole matter of filming The Knowing on the new Red cameras.
His next film is going to be Dracula Year Zero which he describes as a medieval epic. He also described it as a prequel to Bram Stokers Dracula and “all the cool bits out of Francis Ford Coppola’s Dracula”.
