Funny Games (2008) Movie Review

I will start by saying, this moive started off great and could have been one hell of a crazy ride. Funny Games had some of the most tension filled moments i have ever witnessed on film. The villians were some of the most out there and insane characters. But unfortunatly the film defeats the purpose of watching a movie.

Funny Games is far from an original horror film. Its your pretty basic home invasion type movie. A familly on a weekend getaway has the misfortune of falling victim to two seeming crazy teens who hold the family hostage in there cabin. Yeah we have all seen this one before…or have we?

Sure we have seen this done before but this movie does almost everything right. The acting was top notch. Michael Pitt (Paul) and Brady Corbet (Peter,Tom,Beavis) were amazing in there roles as the psychotic teens. These guys are not your typical home invaders here and thats what makes it so easy for them to get the upper hand on the unsuspecting family. Naomi Watts (Ann) and Tim Roth (George) also did a great job with there parts as the scared shittless vitims. They really brought the terror right into your living room.

There was not a ton of gore or special effects in Funny Games. Most of the deaths are not seen but heard which honestly makes the terror seem all the more intence. Instead of tons of gore, good filmmaking keeps focas on the characters and it really does pay off. There was a few long shots were the camera was to far away from the action, so much so even it made it hard to hear what the actors were even saying. Also some of the shots lingered for a little to long. But the rest of the time Michael Haneke did a great job building the suspence. Even the score for the movie added to everything wonderfully.

So after all the praise for this movie i still have to say by the end i hated this film. Well hate is a strong word but really diden’t like it. Why? Because as good a movie as it was, i did not care to be reminded that i was watching a movie. Like i said in the end it really takes you out of it, it terrifys you but then it pulls you back to reallity by throwing it in your face that your watching a movie…you can’t do that! WTF!!!
