Death Walks The Streets Issue 0 Review

For many people Death Walks the Streets the comic will be their first exposure to the unique world that James Zahn has been living for close to five years. I on the other hand am one of the many fans who have been following the project since day one awaiting the live action film. Now on the very brink of the film becoming reality, Zahn has hit us with a prequel series of comics that takes place three years before the film.

Issue #0 is not an introduction into the world of Death Walks the Streets. You are briskly dropped into the world he has created and you really hit the ground running. The story follows one day in the lives of Michael, Danielle and Malcolm as they do their first “official job” for the Organization. Rather than taking the easy route and explaining each of the characters to you, you are brought along for the ride.

This alternate universe in which these characters exist is a nasty one with demons, werewolves and a whole host of other baddies that we haven’t even seen yet. But what was most refreshing about this issue is that you don’t know the past and don’t know the future. It was a way of allowing space to tell more stories and to be able to explore what happened before this day. We are given little details about a prior life in the music biz but the rest is fair game which will provide for some great flashback stories and other revelations in later issues.

The story itself does not get overly complicated and everything is wrapped up in this one issue which makes for a great way to open up the series. If I had one gripe about the way this story was told it would be with the job itself. I’m not sure if I just didn’t pick up on it or what but it felt a little hard to follow. I had to kind of back track and read it again til it really sunk in what had just transpired. But the ending however sets us up for what we have been waiting for.. the main nemesis in the story. From the looks of things this guy means business and the next issue should be a nice bloody mess.

The art was drawn by one, Guilherme Balbi which I am surprised has not done a lot more work in the comics biz. The only bit of work I was able to track him down for was the Who Wants to Be A Superhero! comic book for Feedback. I was really impressed by his pencils and for me that is very important for a comic. I will read a shitty comic as long as the visuals are pleasing.. Thankfully, DWTS has both a great story and fantastic artwork for a real one, two punch.

James Zahn who has been working on making the feature film for quite some time was able to bring his vision into comic book form very easily. His dialogue for the characters is really some of the best stuff I have read. It’s believable lines that I can almost hear people say. He also manages to throw in some little horror tidbits including a twist on a line from Monster Squad that I am sure fans probably already know.

Overall I really had a good time with the book and I actually ended up reading it three or four times. It just amazed me that FINALLY Death Walks The Streets has arrived. If you have been a fan anticipating the movie, if you haven’t already, pick up this series. Currently the only way you can really pick this up is through the official website. I have been speaking with Zahn and it sounds like Diamond Previews will be picking this up hopefully soon so you can just drop in to your local comic shop and pick one up. But until then support the cause!
