Tartan Films Is Dead
A while back we reported that Tartan Films USA was having issues and were going to sell off their assets. The US offices were closed and sold off but the main Tartan Films office remained open in London. However, this appears to have been a sign of the end for the entire company as a whole as Variety reports that Tartan Films officially closed their London offices for business on Thursday. Workers reported to work on June 26th only to find the door locked. They were all later called and told the company was out for business by Tartan head Hamish McAlpine.
Tartan was opened in 1982 and has since become a major playor in the Asian horror distribution market as well as producing many films in the horror genre. Earlier this year the Tartan Films US office sold all their assets to Palisades Media Corp but since that time there has been no word on Palisades plans for the films in that library. With the closing of the main London offices it is unknown what will happen to their film library but it is expected to be sold off sometime soon. We’ll keep you posted if we hear any word on who ends up with rights to all their films.
RIP Tartan Films.
