Rue Morgue Issue 79 Review

Receiving this months issue in the mail was quite a treat when I opened up the white envelope and had the bad ass Machine Girl striking a pose on the cover. Having watched the film prior to reading the articles inside it had already become one of my favorite films of the year so I knew from that instant, I was not alone. This issue mainly dealt with the societies that produce these horror films. What is the climate of the country that would produce a film like this?

Usually the “Note from the Underground” has something to do with a majority of what this issue focuses on. However this week Jovanka did something a little different and spoke about the tattoos that she has. At first glance I thought that was odd. We are talking about Foreign films and the society in which creates them. How do these match up? Well it took awhile to sink in but the focus of this article was about taboos. Horror is different in every country because of their unique taboos. It also addresses the state of the culture we live in today in North America where what once was taboo is now becoming more common place. So what will people do next to avoid the norm? Who knows?

The Dreadlines this week didn’t really reveal anything new for me. However being that with the internet and my job of course being a writer for a horror website, I can see it being quite a task to woo me with something new every time. There is a piece that I did think was interesting about Monsterpocalypse, a new game in which you can control Godzilla-like characters in a sort of Horrorclix world. Something I am going to keep my eye out for.

In America most of the films that we see today are a product of the war in Iraq or the lack of intelligence in the White House at this point. However in the cover article this month “Underage Rage In Japan” it is a whole host of different things but we do have one thing in common, the governments inability to see a problem and find a logical solution. What I found most appealing about this piece is the vast amount of opinions they were able to gather. It was more of a huge interview with Suicide Circle director Sion Sono, Founder of Midnight Eye Tom Mes and Professor and Author Jay McRoy. Within this piece is some nice reviews of The Machine Girl and Noriko’s Dinner Table. We are also treated to a great article about the upcoming film, Tokyo Gore Police.

“The Bloodstained Burqa” is a great interview with director of Hell’s Ground, Omar Ali Kahn. I had not seen the film until after I had read the article so I had a great idea of what to expect going into the film.. But no matter what you read about this film, it doesn’t prepare you for what is going to unfold in the film. I really enjoyed hearing about how he went from being a restaurant chain owner to a blood splattered director. The film and the interview are both worth checking out.

I’m not much of a reader. So when I came across the article about the “Decadence” era I was not really into it. If you are a fan of written horror’s though this should be a very interesting look at a period in literature that is very overlooked.

When Repo! was first announced I wasn’t one of the people who jumped on board. I don’t like musicals and I really don’t like Paris Hilton. But if I am going to be completely honest here, I really am beginning to get interested in this film. “Sing A Song of Savagery” is an article this month that brought me in even a bit closer to the film. I feel that this is definitely going to be a cult hit, but I think it won’t make to much money from the mainstream crowds. It is going to rely heavily on people going to see it two or three times. I think director Darren Lynn Bousman says about as much in this piece about the film as well.

This month John Bowen writes about the Carrie remake starring Angela Bettis. I was among one of the few people who thought it was really one of the better remakes ever made. Apparently I am not alone because Mr. Bowen is right there with me. It was great to see someone else really embrace the film as well and not to dismiss it as just another remake. To all the haters.. I suggest you give his column a read.

The “Travelogue of Terror” this issue brings us all the way to Stokkseyri, Iceland to the Ghost Centre. The column this month as always was a good read but honestly I don’t see myself traveling all the way to Iceland when I could just head to a local dark ride and get about the same experience that was impressed upon the writer, Sean Plummer.

The Gore-Met always has a great perspective on gore drenched films and always digs up stuff I have never even heard of. This month he dug deep underground and pulled out Amicus Mortis and The Gateway Meat. After reading what he said about both films I think I may have to track them down for myself.

As always the issue is jam packed with reviews of DVDs, theatrical releases, comics, novels and CDs. I was very pleased with this months issue and I really can’t recommend this issue more. Check out Rue Morgue Issue 79 on stands now or you can order it at Rue Morgue’s Official Website.
