AFI Disses Horror
The American Film Institute, the folks probably best known for the 100 Best Movies of all Time things has just released the top 10 of 10. The top 10 American films of 10 classic genres. Guess what folks? Horror was strangely absent…dunno why. However “Courtroom Drama” and “Romantic Comedy” somehow are on the list as legitimate genres. They’re sub-genres of a larger genre, Drama and Comedy. Well, at least Caddyshack made #7 for Best Sports Film. You can check out the full list of the films at AFI’s website here.
I don’t understand why they would diss the genre, I mean none of the greatest filmmakers started out with horror and they never dabbled in it and no movie about a transvestite-sexual serial killer would ever get Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress…never in a million years. Horror is just something for sick and twisted mental patients who have never seen the light of day.
Okay, if y’all didn’t pick up on the sarcasm or the obvious references from the last paragraph…well…let’s just leave it at Steven Spielberg & Jaws, Stanely Kubrick and Kenneth Branagh with The Shining and Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein respectfully and of course The Silence of the Lambs.
Horror is a completely legit genre but everyone is scared of the word for some reason. In the case of Lambs, folks went to extreme lengths to call it a ‘Suspense Psychological Thriller’, not Horror. Back in the 1970s if a film like Lambs would be made, barring the title of ‘Exploitation’ it would be called…’Horror’. Probably one of the reasons The Exorcist didn’t get Best Picture is because the filmmakers didn’t try to spin it as a ‘Supernatural Religious Thriller’.
But, since the AFI is fairly up on itself; I hereby present my list of the top 10 American Horror Films. So if anyone in the AFI reads this, pull the poker out your bum, get stuffed, you might not show these films love, but we do.

4. Halloween 1978
5. The Wolf Man 1941
6. Jaws 1975
7. Night of the Living Dead 1968
8. A Nightmare on Elm Street 1984
9. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974
10. Friday the 13th 1980
I would include Nosferatu and M along with numerous others, but to be AFI, they gotta be American. Course there are countless others that I thought about, but these are the ones I feel that have the most impact on American cinema and popular culture. I think these are probably the most important. So, what are y’all’s top 10 American Horror Shows?
