The Strangers Debuts Strong At No. 3!

In a postive note for the horror community, The Strangers made a stong box office debut this weekend.  According to BoxOfficeMojo, The Strangers landed at number 3 behind Indy 4 and Sex & The City with an estimated $20.7 million dollars in its opening weekend. This is a very solid number as it was rated R and was going up against those two movies as well as a still popular Iron Man & Prince Caspian.  I must note that it did this well despite being released in less than 2500 theaters which is almost a 1000 less theaters than anything else in the top 5.  Also, the budget for The Strangers is listed at $9 million, so it made over double what the film cost to make and can only go up in profit from here on out.

All these things are very good signs for a horror movie with an R rating.  R Rated horror films have seemed to been suffering at the box office lately even during slow box office periods.  I know $20 million blew away what I thought it was going to make up against a strong early summer release schedule.  I think solid advertising highlighting the creepy & tense atmosphere really helped push this film to a great weekend.

Maybe the success of The Strangers just goes to show that its not the genre thats suffering but the excessive blood and gore thats been keeping people away.  Who knows.
