According to ComingSoon all the talk of Cloverfield 2 is just that.. all talk. The team assembled to work on CloverField 2 apparently is interested in doing another project and not a sequel to Cloverfield. Two thoughts on this.

First off nobody should be eager to do a Cloverfield sequel. The movie was a huge hit because of viral advertising and in my opinion… it wont happen twice. To generate the same sort of hype and buzz through viral marketing and building the same level of suspense and intensity would be pretty darn tough since we are all now onto the gig. We know what they are up to and the genie as they say is out of the bottle.

The other side of this and my second train of thought is dont believe a word that JJ says. He could very well be spinning the media to get the attention away from the sequel so he can ATTEMPT to at least get it off the ground with minimal attention.
