Iced Review

A number of years ago I would often find myself at the horror section at my local Blockbuster, and I would always pass by the cover for this film, yet I never rented it. It just didn’t look like a movie I’d like, but of course all I was going on was the cover art. Now that I’m older I’m trying to catch up on some horror films I was always curious about growing up. I finally got my hands on this movie, and I have to say that it wasn’t all that bad of a flick, although I wouldn’t say that I necessarily missed out on much. by not renting it all those years ago.

The film delivers the standard 80’s slasher premise of a man getting revenge on his peers many years after some tragic event. Only this time, it’s set with a snowy backdrop at a secluded cabin in an expensive ski resort. The killer in this flick is a thought-to-be-dead acquaintance of the group, who is dressed up in his old ski gear, cracked visors included. Aside from the setting, what makes this movie stand out is the surprisingly decent script. Instead of simply making this a cheesy slash’em up, they opted for a more realistic approach. The dialogue between the group and the events that unfolded were all actually somewhat realistic, which was quite a shock for me. I’m used to my 80’s films filled with a bunch of senseless gore, deaths and boobs.

Since the movie does go towards a more realistic approach, we don’t have much in terms of deaths until towards the end of the film. That and we actually don’t see the killer much, aside from a few shots here and there as he keeps a close eye on his victims. There are a couple shots seen through his cracked visor, which I liked for some reason. The movie isn’t for everyone, as it’s fairly slow-paced and relies mostly on dialogue and the characters to move things along. Speaking of which, I didn’t like the lead female much (especially how idiotic she was at the end) and the killer himself wasn’t very menacing. There’s also not much gore and the twist delivered at the end wasn’t much of a surprise. All negative aside, I had to give the film credit for focusing more on the dialogue and characters, and for the most part, it kept my interesting.

This is a rare low-budget slasher from the 80’s that relies more on the script than on-screen deaths. Although slow-paced, the dialogue and characters keep the viewer interested, as it offers a more realistic approach towards certain situations. The flick isn’t for everyone, so rent at your own risk.
