An American Werewolf in London Review
After the success of Animal House and The Blues Brothers, writer/director John Landis ventured into horror territory by bringing forth a movie that he wrote in his late teens. That movie was An American Werewolf in London. Budgeted at $10-million and making $30-million overall, the movie was a success amongst horror and movie-fans alike. Still to this day it’s ranked as one of the best horror films in many veteran horror fans list. I personally think it’s one of the best werewolf movies ever made. Much like the style of Landis, he manages to add some nice humor among all the “horror”.
In this film two friends from the U.S. take a cross-country trip through London; ending up in the outskirts within some small town that don’t take kindly to outsiders (naturally). They warn the duo of the town and stress the fact that they have to leave before it’s too late. Well once they do leave it is too late, because as they walk through the foggy abyss of the night sky, they get attacked by a werewolf. One friend dies, while the other is merely bitten. The man is then sent off to a London hospital. You can guess as to what happens now. The man is plagued by all the victims he’s killed while in his Lycan form, and eventually runs amok through the streets of London.
This obviously wasn’t my first time viewing the movie, but I’ve noticed that through each viewing I’m as equally entertained as I was when I first saw it. This is definitely a movie that doesn’t weaken with age, especially with the effects used with the gore and werewolf transformations. Yes, this is a horror flick that’ll forever remain as a classic, especially amongst werewolf films.
Good story; good humor; sweet gore; werewolf running amok in the crowded streets of London; what more could you want? Definitely worth a check if you haven’t seen it already.
