Dust Devil Review

The story centers on a drifter who goes from town to town in the South African desert in search for fresh human souls, so he can return back to the “other world”. He eventually meets up with a woman, who recently split with her husband, and falls for her, despite the fact he’ll have to be rid of her and take her soul. She discovers his plan before he can do anything, and a chase between the two ensues.

While watching this movie I noticed how the lead guy looked familiar. I checked up on it and it turned out that he also played in the Stephen King film Thinner and he’ll have a role in the upcoming flick, Hide and Seek. I also noticed some slight similarities to another weird “horror” flick that came out in the early 90’s called Hardware that starred The Practice’s Dylan McDermott. Well director Richard Stanley also directed that film, which explains the atmospheric and dirty scenery, but enough of me noticing things.

This turned out to be a decent flick. It was interesting, but sometimes a little weird and confusing (much like Hardware). The biggest problem I had with this was probably the slow-pace. Not much was going on and since it’s all taken place in a desert area, most of the scenery was plain and bored me. Although the story is original, and the “Dust Devil” character is cool, I felt more could have been done to show the true strength of the lead villian. It is a violent flick, but not much for scares. In the end I thought a 6-rating was best fitting, because it’s a good movie, but a little too slow.

A decent flick, but skip it if you’re looking for something with more going on. It’s heavy on story and dialogue with some short violent scenes now and then and it really picks up towards the end, but it’s too slow for the most part. Rent at your own risk.
