Dreamcatcher Review

This movie is obviously based on the book by Stephen King. I never read the book, so I can’t really compare the film to the book, but I’m sure it’s a lot better than the movie was. Books always seem to be better than their films. This still isn’t a bad movie in the end. The story is about a group of four friends who decide to go on a vacationing trip to a secluded cabin in the woods. Fighting the blizzard, they encounter a sick stranger, whom they invite inside. Not-soon-after, the sick stranger gets worse and eventually the men discover an odd alien creature moving about in the cabin. As the plot unfolds, we learn that an alien race is planning on taking over the Earth and it’s up to the friends and their special childhood friend named Duddits to stop it.

I wanted to see this movie when it went to theatres, but I never got around to it. I heard a lot of mixed reviews around that time, so not seeing the movie wasn’t much of a big deal for me, but I knew once it hit DVD that I’d check it out, because I enjoy sci-fi/horror-type flicks that involve a deadly alien species taking over the Earth. I didn’t know what to expect when I checked this movie out, and not having read the book made me know even less about the film. From the trailer alone, I thought the alien race was taking over people’s bodies and it would be something along the lines of The Thing, where paranoia plays a big part in the film. I was way off, because the alien only takes over one person’s body and the rest of the stuff is taken care of by the weird worm-like creatures that apparently lay dormant in people’s bodies and eventually come out of the victim’s ass. Sort of like Alien, only dirtier.

The movie kept my interest from the start and I enjoyed it all the way though, but it seemed like it was being rushed towards the end. A lot of events were happening and not much was being explained and the movie just ended. It was pretty obvious that a lot from the huge book wasn’t in the movie. I did, however, enjoy the ending. I thought it was pretty cool, although predictable. The performances were well played by Morgan Freeman and Jason Lee. There were some decent scares, but nothing worth mentioning. Obviously I didn’t get scared, I rarely do. I’m not quite sure if that’s a good thing or not. I decided a 7-rating was best fitting since I liked the movie, but thought it was being too rushed towards the end.

A decent film, but not the best book-to-movie from Stephen King. Enjoyable, but a little rushed. Worth a rent if you’ve got nothing else.
