2LDK Review
This, much like Living Hell, is a low-budget film that shopped around for distribution for a while before finally getting a US DVD debut. This movie is part of the Yukihiko Tsutsumi and Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus) team-up with their Duel-Films company that was originally just a small idea amongst colleagues that turned into reality after a few meetings together. The two talented directors had an idea to make their own film that basically shows nothing more than specific characters dueling it out. Ryuhei Kitamura came out with Aragami while Yukihiko came out with 2LDK, which essentially has only two people in the entire film, with the exception of another character who’s only a supporting role that’s shown in certain flash sequences.
This movie follows the two main (and only) characters, who are revealed to be aspiring actresses and roommates. One girl is a high-maintenance, spoiled, money-spender from the city, while the other is a shy quiet girl from the country — the perfect odd couple. The two girls are aiming for the same role in a new feature film called “Yakuza Wives”. You add that plus a lot of the little annoyances that the two have for each other and eventually they lead to fighting to the death with common household tools like a blow-dryer and a chainsaw(?).
This is a cool original thriller that kept my interesting from the beginning. It was also interesting to hear what going on through the girl’s heads and how different it was from what they were actually saying to each other. I wouldn’t be surprised if girls actually did that in real life. The film starts out pretty simple with the girls arguing over this and that and watch as it leads to more physical and verbal abuse. Towards the end of the flick things start to get really violent as we witness the girls start to really hurt each other. Although I was expecting more violence, I thought what was delivered was still quite effective, and the use of household tools instead of actual weapons made things even more interesting.
A solid thriller that isn’t very far from reality. Check this out if you’re looking for something original, but don’t expect a whole lot of violence until towards the end.
