The People Under the Stairs Review
I love this movie! I’m not a big Wes Craven fan, but this is one of his movie that I really enjoy. I remember watching it when I was younger and really liking it, so when it came out on DVD I knew I had to get it.The story is about a couple crooks and a young boy (Brandon Adams), who all live in the ghetto. They decide to rob the landlord’s house after hearing they keep a large stash of gold somewhere inside. One of the crooks disguised as a meter-reader enters the house in hopes of scoping out the security. The landlords eventually leave the house for a bit, which confuses the other crook (Ving Rhames) and boy, because their partner was left inside. The two — thinking the other guy might have found the gold and left with it already — decide to break into the house themselves, but soon discover the other guy dead and that the landlords have not only returned, but have locked down the house.
What I’ve always enjoyed about this movie was the variety of different things it would offer. It didn’t just focus on the “people under the stairs,” but also the weird landlords and their home that has so much security it could substitute as a prison. It also had a decent story, with the theme of stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Sure the movie isn’t really good for scares, but hell if it isn’t entertaining. It’s also rare to see such a young lead in a rated-R horror flick now-a-days. I enjoyed this movie as much as I did when I was younger, so I thought an 8-rating was best. I personally find it to be a really entertaining and original horror flick and I’m sure because of the fact that it’s a movie that I enjoyed as a kid made me like it even more than I would have had I seen it recently.
A good and entertaining horror flick. Gives you a mix-bag of things and doesn’t just focus on what’s “under the stairs.” Not recommended for scares or gore, but worth a check if you’re lookin’ fora fun flick.
