13 Seconds Review
I normally don’t bother watching low-budget movies that people send to me, because they are usually just a waste of time, but after hearing a lot of positive buzz on this little indie pic, I figured I’d give it a chance. The movie caught me off guard, because it’s actually a decent flick. The story is about a group of musicians setting up in an old house to do a music video. Immediately after entering the house, strange things start to occur and it doesn’t take long for the crew to turn up missing. The movie’s plot is quite simple, with some religious babble and mind-bending imagery thrown in. This movie will make you think, which is rare with direct-to-video flicks now-a-days.
Surprisingly I wasn’t really bored at any moments while watching the movie, but I was a little annoyed by some of the acting, especially done by one of the lead females. A crazy event would occur and she’d just be standing there expressionless, almost as if she’s waiting for the director to give her to “OK” to act, which she fails to do. It makes a little sense why she was acting the way she was towards the end, but even so, some of it was just plain horrible to the point that I wanted to slap her, and that’s one of the main reasons why I didn’t like the flick as much as I wanted. The effects for the film weren’t too bad. I liked how some of the demons looked and there was a decent amount of gore. A but of a downside for the flick was it was rather predictable at times, and I felt there wasn’t enough character development, but that usually doesn’t matter with horror movies anyway. Towards the end of the film I saw the twist coming, but I still enjoyed watching it none-the-less.
Sure the movie does kind-of rip-off the creepy head-shaking that we all saw in the movie Jacob’s Ladder and the acting it very bad at times, but you have to give credit to director Jeff Thomas that he actually did a decent job here and I’m looking forward to see what else he’ll come up with for the horror genre. I would have given it a higher rating, but I felt some things in the script could have used more work and the acting was a little iffy at times.
OVERALL
A decent watch for a low-budget direct-to-video flick. Rips off a few things, but overall an original flick compared to most other DTVs.
