Prom Night Tops Box Office With $23 Million
(Bloomberg) — “Prom Night,” a horror film starring Brittany Snow, was the top film at U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, selling $22.7 million for Sony Corp.
The movie topped Keanu Reeves’s “Street Kings,” a thriller about corrupt Los Angeles police officers, which finished second with $12 million for News Corp.’s Twentieth Century Fox, box- office tracker Media By Numbers LLC said today in a statement.
Sony attracted teenagers to “Prom Night” with trailers before the studio’s “21,” the top film for the past two weekends, said Gitesh Pandya, editor of BoxOfficeGuru.com. “Prom Night” is a PG-13 remake of a 1980 horror film Starring Jamie Lee Curtis, in which a killer stalks teens during a school dance.
“Horror film openings have gotten smaller and smaller this year as some fatigue has kicked in,” Pandya said. “But `Prom Night’ has an appealing premise, a recognizable title and a terrific marketing push that is exciting the core crowd.”
