Waves of Lust (Ondata di piacere, Una)
Ruggero Deodato will forever go down in filmmaking history for giving the world one of the most controversial and influential films ever with Cannibal Holocaust. What seems to be overlooked is a lot of the other films he has made and besides a few exceptions its probably for the best. “Waves of Lust” is a perfect example of this. The bottom line is the film is awful and pointless. What there is of a plot follows a young couple that get caught up in another couple abusive relationship. The husband is a ruthless business man that doesn’t treat his wife as much as a spouse as a slave. That does what she is told and only comes in his room when he wants sex. The young couple witness a lot of this almost as soon as they meet them, yet they still agree to join the husband and wife on their yacht for a weekend cruise. Once they get on the boat they seem to want to swap partners, which in one minute everyone seems alright with then the next their fighting over each other’s women.
The film is well over ninety minutes but it really doesn’t go anywhere. There is a bit of blood in the ending but not nearly what you’d expect from a Deodato film. What the film does have is boundless amount of sex and nudity but its just that. pointless exploitation. The characters are paper thin which I can deal with but there isn’t any motivations either. There were a few time I thought there would be a twist maybe involving the young couple getting revenge for someone or something or maybe that they were even more twisted and disturbed but there was really nothing. That being said the film was shot well with good cinematography of the tropical islands and oceans.
The exploitation sex scenes were also pretty tantalizing but with the unrated version I watched I really doubt that North American audiences got the same treatment when the film was originally released. As for the acting there really isn’t much to say. It was your average looking Italian cast of characters. Both of the lead women looked great in and out of their clothes but they really didn’t offer much in the way of performances and the male leads weren’t much better. Overall this was a waste of time and really didn’t offer much in the way of thrills or shocks. I’m sure there are Deodato fans out there that love this film along with his other weaker efforts but for me it was just plain bad.
