The Sister of Ursula

By the time The Sister of Ursula was released in theaters it was already way past the golden age of the giallo. Bava and Argento had both already went through their fantastic pieces of work and nothing original was really able to be done. Now enter The Sister of Ursula where on the outside the tale seems to be pretty straight forward but the murder weapon is beyond what any director would have done.

Ursula (Barbara Magnolfi, Suspiria) and her sister Dagmar (Stefania D’Amario, Zombi 2) decide to go on a vacation together. Not long after arriving at the hotel however it becomes very apparent that Ursula is not having a good time. She begins to shrug off her sister and eventually tells her that the man she is eyeing is going to kill her. Believing her sister is just being rude she continues to see the man but not without hearing an earful from her sister. Then the first murder takes place. The woman is found brutally attacked by a giant phallus and split right up the middle! Ursula continues to have visions and people continue to turn up dead. So who is the killer? The shifty eyed boyfriend? Dagmar? The motel owner? The ending is a real shocker and the way to it isn’t half bad either.

Scanners (2008)

David Cronenberg’s 1981 classic Scanners is one of the director’s most famous genre entries as well as it contains one of the most famous scenes of all time, the exploding head at the start. Being a classic and all it isn’t much of a surprise that it is getting remade.

We reported a while ago that scribe David Goyer, who has penned the Blade Trilogy & Batman Begins will be writing the remake. Darren Lynn Bousman of SAW II, III, and IV was at one point apparently not going to direct, but it seems now he is fully locked into the remake.

This daughter of a Columbia University professor and a former model-turned-psychotherapist is named after a Hindu goddess. Tall, sylph-like and solemn-eyed, Uma Thurman moved to NYC at age 16 and like her mother, began her career as a Click model, posing for numerous magazines. The blonde beauty segued to acting in 1987 with the independent feature “Kiss Daddy Good Night”, as a young seductress who entices men only to rob them. Thurman received wide attention as the perfectly buxom, virginal victim of John Malkovich’s seduction in Stephen Frears’ “Dangerous Liaisons” (1998) before furthering her visibility as the Goddess of Love in Terry Gilliam’s madcap opus “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen” (1989).

Official Casting Begins for Friday Remake

Just a couple hours ago we informed you that Michael Bailey Smith was definitely in the running for Jason. Well now we have some solid casting information concerning who will be among the potential victims. The Hollywood Reporter says that Jared Padalecki of Supernatural will play the lead.

Well it looks like we got the answer of what kind of cast we were going to be looking at. Lets see what other WB stars they can bring into the cast by the time shooting begins. Honestly however this should have been pretty obvious from the get go. Well I guess it shouldn’t matter too much as long as all these faces show up on the chopping block. The release will of course be set on February 13th, 2009.

13: Game of Death

13-game-of-death.jpg

The only thing I may enjoy more than Asian horror movies is Asian gameshows.  Between those two things one can stay entertained forever.  So when I heard there was a Thai horror film coming out that revolved around a twisted game show, i knew this film was for me.  13 Game of Death was the film and it did a great job mixing game show ideas with thriller elements to hook me in.  Unfortunately it was unable to satisfy as the ending twist was a bit much for me and went to far down the social commentary path.  However there is plenty to keep you hooked as you want to see what happens during each step of the game.

Kill Devil

kill-devil.jpg

When thinking of the asian horror genre, there are so many movies that revolves around the supernatural, torture, murder, etc. There are also certain ones that deals with survival. But when watching these types of movies, it pretty much leaves the same conclusion. They draw you into the depths within the deepest region of the movie so much that each scene can take a real toll on you that will make you cringe with each gutwrenching part that is taking place at that very second and completely messes with your head. But also for the fact that it can actually make you think and feel as if you are right there deep within the movie. What will you do if you woke up on an island, not knowing who you are, no memory, or not knowing where you are? But also finding out that you aren’t alone and you have to survive for your very own life? These questions and many more you’ll be asking yourself when it comes to the movie Kill Devil.

Now You See Me, Now You Don’t

now-you-see-me.jpg

The most effective way to pull someone into a film of any kind is too include the family unit. This is especially true in the horror genre. I think for some of us our worst fears are losing the people we love the most, our family. So from Night of the Living Dead to Who Can Kill A Child? the thought of children or of family members being harmed is very hard for us to digest. Director Atilla Szasz has taken that primal fear and used it brilliantly in his short film Now You See Me, Now You Don’t.
