The Last Horror Movie
With all the hype surrounding “Behind the Mask” last year a film that was mentioned a lot was “Man bites dog” and how the two films dealt with similar subject matter. What surprises me is how The Last horror film was never mentioned in the company of the other films. For me I found this film more effective then “Behind the mask” because of how it dealt with such realistic and terrifying subject matter that forces the viewer to go along for the ride weather he or she wants to or not. The story fallows a serial killer named Max, played wonderfully by Kevin Howarth. Max has murdered over fifty people from his own accounts but now wants to do something different. With the help of a young impressionable assistant Max sets out to film his journey into madness and murder as he tries to explain why he does what he does and simply to just do something “thats never been done before”.
As the film progresses Max tapes over a rented VHS tape of a slasher film called “The Last horror film” and catches people in the act of witnessing his own home made movies on film. The story is simplistic but well executed and the film isn’t as much about what happens but more of a character study on Max. The film also doesn’t ever feel exploitative, although there is a fair amount of well done gore its not the focus of the movie. A lot of the kills are done off screen but played out in real time with no music or fancy camera work which gives the film a disturbingly realistic feel to it. With a film that focuses one one character so much of the success of the film rests on the ability of the lead actor Kevin Howarth who delivers a near perfect performance.
The most shocking part of his performance isn’t his ability to terrify you but his ability to actually make you almost take his side and I never really hated him even after some of the more horrible things he did. Overall I can’t recommend this film enough. From start to finish it kept me enthralled and delivered some truly disturbing scenes. The filmmakers also ask some tough questions and really made me think about how we look at real life killers and how close they might be to everyone else.
