Eyes of Laura Mars Review
The “Eyes of Laura Mars” is a very well acted and stylized thriller that has high production values and an interesting story idea. The main problem I had with this film was how dull and slow moving the plot was. The story is about a Photographer named Laura Mars, played by the beautiful Faye Dunaway. Laura has become famous because of her talent for taking provocative sexy and violent pictures of fashion models. Within the first few minutes of the film Laura witnesses what she learns later is the murder of one of her friends. Soon Laura realizes that somehow she is able to see the murders of her colleges and friends through the killers eyes as it happens. As more people around her start to get killed the police get more and more suspicious that she has some involvement with the murders especially when its discovered that the murder scenes almost match perfectly to pictures Laura has taken for a book.
The only person that actually really believes in Laura is detective John Neville played by a young Tommy Lee Jones, who soon falls in love with Laura. Although this film is from the late 70’s I’m not going to give away the ending since its such a big part of the story but I do want to comment on how good it was. Even for a veteran horror fan like myself I actually didn’t figure out who the killer was until the very end which really caught me off guard since it was so out in left field. The film did a very good job of setting up “red hairings”. There wasn’t just one or two obvious characters that you thought could be the killer but numerous ones which makes a film like this all the more fun. Irvin Kershner the director also did a great job of framing shot and adding noticeable style to the film. Sadly I can’t say the same for John Carpenter’s screenplay that he co-wrote. Although the premise was good and for the most part fairly original. Aside from the ending it really didn’t dare to go out of its comfort zone.
The film is very restrained and slow moving which was surprising coming from a filmmaker like Carpenter. The acting was the other strong part of the film and with a cast of the likes of Faye Dunaway, Tommy Lee Jones and Brad Dourif why wouldn’t it be? The entire cast including the small supporting members were all strong actors and helped carry the film through some of the slower more boring parts of the film. Overall I’d recommend people go out and at least rent this film if your into more slower paced thrillers. The film is not a classic by any stretch but its well made and enjoyable for the most part.
