The Sister of Ursula

By the time The Sister of Ursula was released in theaters it was already way past the golden age of the giallo. Bava and Argento had both already went through their fantastic pieces of work and nothing original was really able to be done. Now enter The Sister of Ursula where on the outside the tale seems to be pretty straight forward but the murder weapon is beyond what any director would have done.

Ursula (Barbara Magnolfi, Suspiria) and her sister Dagmar (Stefania D’Amario, Zombi 2) decide to go on a vacation together. Not long after arriving at the hotel however it becomes very apparent that Ursula is not having a good time. She begins to shrug off her sister and eventually tells her that the man she is eyeing is going to kill her. Believing her sister is just being rude she continues to see the man but not without hearing an earful from her sister. Then the first murder takes place. The woman is found brutally attacked by a giant phallus and split right up the middle! Ursula continues to have visions and people continue to turn up dead. So who is the killer? The shifty eyed boyfriend? Dagmar? The motel owner? The ending is a real shocker and the way to it isn’t half bad either.

Now in terms of sexploitation films this is definitely one of the most plot driven I have seen. Its not often that the Eurosleaze films get much of anything to work with. But here director Enzo Milioni really manages to capture a beautiful setting and a decent story line all in one. I was also pleased with the score that was set in place for the film by Mimi Uva.

But overall what do you look for in any good sexploitation flick? Hot chicks! This flick has got those as well. The killer strikes after a couple is through having sex so that means lots of skin and a bonus lesbian scene as well. Barbara Magnolfi is absolutely mesmerizing in this role. Her eyes pierce right through you. Another beauty who shows a little more skin is Stefania D’Amario who you will probably recognize from her roles in Zombi 2 and Nightmare City. She appears nude in this film more times than I can count which is always a plus.

Acting in the film is adequate in exception to Marc Pero who plays Filippo. He did a really great job and the role is perfect for the actor. In a way it somewhat mirrored what was going on his personal life with drug abuse problems. So maybe he had a step up on the other actors where he had some real life experience dealing with the same issues his character had. But overall the cast did a decent job nothing that bad.

The DVD has been released by Severin Films and once again they have done a pretty damn good job. Just a couple of specs here and there on the print but otherwise the colors just pop from this print. The film is all in Itallian with English subtitles. Special features includes a rather detailed interview with director/writer Enzo Milioni. He goes on about the actors and finding the location. Really a great watch and he even has the murder weapon after all these years!

Overall it is great to see another grindhouse sexploitation flick being released on DVD completely uncut. This is far from the best giallo you will ever see but one that must be seen to be believed that’s for sure.
