Scanners (2008)
David Cronenberg’s 1981 classic Scanners is one of the director’s most famous genre entries as well as it contains one of the most famous scenes of all time, the exploding head at the start. Being a classic and all it isn’t much of a surprise that it is getting remade.
We reported a while ago that scribe David Goyer, who has penned the Blade Trilogy & Batman Begins will be writing the remake. Darren Lynn Bousman of SAW II, III, and IV was at one point apparently not going to direct, but it seems now he is fully locked into the remake.
Fangoria got word from the director that right after he finishes everything on his newest film Repo! The Genetic Opera (hits theaters on April 25, 2008) he will be hopping right over to Dimension to direct the film. This is what he had to say:
“I will be involved in the remake. I was very reluctant at first. I yelled and screamed, ‘No one should remake Cronenberg! After David told me his take, I was blown away…His script is out there. He’s a genius.”
The time that Dimension has for the film is extremely tight. They have already set an October 2008 release. But as we all know Bousman is hardly a stranger to fast productions as from script to screen in barely a year’s time for the three SAW sequels is quite a feat.
David Goyer, while I am iffy at the moment on his directorial skills, there is no doubt he is one of the best writers out in Hollywood for genre films and Darren Lynn Bousman is quickly emerging as a very competent director. So hopefully their combined force will at the very least pay good homage to the original and not simply be a shot for shot remake.
The remake of Scanners comes out October 17, 2008.
