Mr. Video
Mr. Video is a fifteen minute horror/comedy short that I was glad to be able to check out that comes from us courtesy of our friends from across the pond in the U.K. Usually in these films the comedy is sometimes lost in translation and I can tell you I am definitely one of those people who doesn’t get a lot of it. But this short still manages to keep its comedy intact and entertain with some great horror elements as well.
The story goes that a local video store owner is going through a rough patch. DVD piracy is biting into his business and he has to find a way to deal with it. Now for me I knew right away what was going on and it never really seemed like there was any secret to be revealed. I think Director Alex Masterson showed his hand a little too early in the game which I would think is a hard thing to do when you only have 15 minutes to tell the story.
I felt that even though I knew what was going on the whole time though that I really love the basic core story. I think it could definitely make for an interesting feature film with a little bit more tweaking to the script to hide some of the details that I think are given away too soon in the film. Despite that the idea is very original and I was pretty surprised that I had never seen this attempted before.
As a calling card for this up and comer I think he has a future a head of himself in horror. I would still suggest maybe working a little more on the script and being more subtle with the nods he gave away in the beginning of the film. Overall though it was a fun flick that with a running time of only 15 minutes anyone can check out. Hopefully he continues to work on his craft and master some more techniques that will improve on the storytelling aspects of his filmmaking.
