Kill Devil

When thinking of the asian horror genre, there are so many movies that revolves around the supernatural, torture, murder, etc. There are also certain ones that deals with survival. But when watching these types of movies, it pretty much leaves the same conclusion. They draw you into the depths within the deepest region of the movie so much that each scene can take a real toll on you that will make you cringe with each gutwrenching part that is taking place at that very second and completely messes with your head. But also for the fact that it can actually make you think and feel as if you are right there deep within the movie. What will you do if you woke up on an island, not knowing who you are, no memory, or not knowing where you are? But also finding out that you aren’t alone and you have to survive for your very own life? These questions and many more you’ll be asking yourself when it comes to the movie Kill Devil.

Many people have violent impulses, but what makes some people give into them while others resist? It’s the year 2025 in this Japanese dystopic horror film, and a gene has been discovered that compels people to kill one another. On a secluded island, horrible experiments are being conducted on young people with the proclivity to murder, but with the introduction of a new, top-secret study, the youngsters begin killing each other off with ever-increasing ferocity.

In order to create any movie, not only is the director and cameraman play a huge factor. But what makes a movie is the actors and actresses. The main thing that determines the cast is if they were the right choices to fill the part of that specific character. Well in this case, each actor and actress were exceptionally good. Eachone had that certain credibility to each of their performance to as where you can tell that they had brought everything to the table and can tell how serious they can be. But there are times that a couple of the performances were in fact sluggish at times. So basically, there are some that, were in fact, took their roles seriously and others just mediocre.

When it comes down to the special fx and props, it can either make or break a movie. Basically, if there is to much that had been used and over exaggerated it, then it could possibly ruin the movie. But that is definitely not in this case. Just the right amount of special fx had been used. But all of the special fx pretty much had dealt with the props were being used. That being said, all of the props used truly made those certain scenes jump out at you. It’s because of the props, a scythe, a weed wacker, knives, ice picks, the movie wouldn’t of been complete nor turned out what it is.

When it comes to finding that certain director, he must push the entire cast and crew to their full potential so that he can make his vision come to life. Director, Yuichi Onuma, had done just that. When director Kinji Fukasaku had created Battle Royale, he knew exactly how he wanted the movie to look and feel. Along with finding the right cast and crew to work on the movie. Just like Fukasaku, Onuma had found the right cast and crew to get the job done. He had pointed everyone into the right direction and to their full capability as much as he possibly could. Each cast and crew member had shown that they belong in the right business. Bottomline, Yuichi Onuma was not only the right director to do this movie. But he is right up to par with Kinji Fukasaku. If it wasn’t for Onuma, Kill Devil wouldn’t have been possible.

When looking for that certain cameraman, he has to know his surroundings and show exactly how the director wants each shot by shot and frame by frame. Director Yuichi Onuma knew exactly who he wanted to be behind the camera. The way that Onuma wanted each specific shot and angle to look, the cameraman had shown just that. You can tell as each scene went on that you can really see the professionalism that lies within the shots and angles. However, when it did come to a couple of scenes, there was times that the cemera was shaky. Now i’m not sure if he did that on purpose, or not, or Onuma told him that he wanted to look. But it was sort of rough to the eyes a bit. But besides that little shakiness, I would say he had done a superb job well done.

Now as far as the sound fx go, there was just the right amount that had been used. Practically all of it consisted of when the certain weapons were being used. Each one had that professional feel to the sound, in which each one gave off that realistic sound to it. However, I feel as if the siren in the movie was a bit to much. I understand that specific sound did also play a factor in the movie. So besides that siren, the crew who worked on the sound fx knew exactly what they were doing.

When it came down to the music, there was just enough. There was hardly any used. But when it was, it mainly came into play with the beginning and end credits. Along with when specific characters were about to fight, or when they were killing off someone.

Overall, for when it comes to the movie Kill Devil, you’ll feel as if you’re right there in the movie itself. Kill Devil has the similar elements and qualities as Battle Royale does. However, is a tad different. It’s that whole thing that both movies can really get to you and can possibly be your worst fears. Just not knowing where you are, memory completely wiped out, and not knowing who is on the island. But to make the matters worse, what you are going to come across and who it is, which are other people are are out to kill one another. So basically, if you are a fan of Battle Royale, it’s safe to say that you are going to thoroughly enjoy this movie, Kill Devil.
