Alone in the Dark Tech Demo Footage
1992’s Alone in the Dark is one of the landmarks of video gaming as it was one of the first survival horror games to come out. Since then, it has spawned 4 sequels, the fourth to come out this June as well as 2 film adaptations, one due to come out sometime this or next year hopefully.
Also since the original game, console and computer engines have grown stronger and technology has evolved to a high extent. One of the best survival horror games in recent years is of course Resident Evil 4 and to some extent Bioshock, both provide awesome gameplay with strong storylines and in the case of Bioshock, the ability to upgrade your character. It would seem at the moment that Alone in the Dark will advance the possibilities of survival horror and raise the bar for the genre.
By that I mean is the tech demo videos developer Eden Games has been releasing. Gamespot got a hold of them and all I got to say is…holy crap. The new AitD pushes the envelope of what one can do in survival horror. These are the links to video number one and video number two. The vids are for the Xbox360 (:)), but I imagine this will be the same for PS3 and a bit altered for Wii.
Allow me to just tease you a bit on what you’ll see. First off, the items you carry are actually carried on your person in your jacket and belt. When the gun is fired (as I recall in video two) into a metal door, the door dents like it would in real life, no longer just a hole, but a dent. Hopefully that will mean in gameplay the player can use a shotgun or an axe to bust open a door. As well as when the gamer picks up large objects (like a pipe), they can swing it around using the right analog stick as powerfully or as surgically as you can. Want to move a hanging wire out of the water so you may pass, now you can. You can also make makeshift weapons with items such as a lighter, bottle of fuel or even your medical spray!
Don’t want to give everything away, so check out the vids! If it was just interview, I might not have believed it totally, but seeing it on video…it looks good. I can’t wait to get my hands on a demo of this. Alone in the Dark comes out on PC, Xbox360, PS2, PS3, PSP and Wii on June 2, 2008.
