WrestleManiac Review
I had a chance to checkout Wrestlemaniac and have to say that although the movie is far from flawed and does add a unique twist by mixing Mexican Wrestling and slash flick into one it doesnt quite deliver an over the top experience. That said it far from fails at entertaining. The premise of the film goes like this;
On their way to Caba San Lucas, the cast and crew of a low-budget film get lost and come upon “La Sangre De Dios”, a ghost town with a spine-tingling legend about an insane Mexican wrestler. The leader of the pack and first time director, Alphonse, likes the town’s gritty appearance and decides it would be the perfect setting for his film. The crew positions the camera and snaps on the lights. When Alphonse yells “Action!”, it arouses the famous and now insane Luchador, “El Mascarado” (The Masked Man), who begins a game of his own. One by one, the cast and crew are snatched, beaten and dragged to a bloody death. The few left alive must figure out how to beat the wrestler at his own deadly game, or die trying.
Overall I give credit for a unique take on the deranged killer angle. The whole concept of a Mexican Wrestler who takes things a step to far and starts murdering people and ripping their faces off instead of their mask to ‘humiliate’ definitely brings a new angle to the genre.
This is your classic slasher flick. Well written? Not really. Is it badly written? No. The acting is reasonable. Is it top notch? No. Is it bad? Not at all. Its your typical 80’s slasher flick only it wasnt made in the 80’s. Its a slasher flick with boobs, wrestling, face ripping, ass kicking and a whole lot of blood and guts when you reach the end of the film. If you are a fan of films with depth, articulate acting and twists and turns Wrestlemaniac is far from your film. If you like campy classic horror films that have your cliche band of characters, the pot head, the hot chicks, the cool guy and the fat kid then this movie is for you. It doesnt try to be what its not.
Its a slasher flick with a mix of classic genre horror and a Mexican Wrestler turned killer. For an indie film its very well done and although I cant say its going to blow your mind I think its safe to say if you like films like Halloween and Texas Chainsaw massacre and can appreciate the indie genre you will enjoy this movie. Overall I enjoyed this film for what it was and would encourage fans of the TNA / Killer flicks to check it out for some mindless entertainment.
