Sisters Review
A remake of the 1973 Brian De Palma film with the same name, one would wonder why anyone would bother remaking a film like this. Usually remakes are only greenlit because they have a decent fanbase built behind the original film already, which pretty much guarantees some sort of profit. A film like Sisters wasn’t exactly a success nor even known by many to begin with. I for one hadn’t heard of the original until news of the remake broke out a few years back. When the project was first announced back in ‘04 Asia Argento was supposedly attached as the lead, but was eventually replaced by Anna Mouglalis, who was then replaced by Lou Doillon.
So the film follows Chloe Sevigny’s character as an investigative reporter, who’s looking to find out the truth behind Dr. Phillip Lacan (Stephen Rea) and his relationship with one of his patients (Lou Doillon). When the reporter breaks into the doctor’s apartment, she discovers a computer monitor with video of the inside of another apartment building. While watching the footage she witnesses a murder, and suspects the female patient as the killer, and the doctor is somehow involved. The plot thickens when it’s revealed that the real murderer may be the unseen twin of the young girl.
I have to admit that I went in with low-expectations, and actually found the movie to be fairly interesting, despite its many flaws. However, the script is so full of holes that it’s just too hard to look past, and proves to be the biggest problem with the film. Not only that, but we pretty much follow one character for the first 40-minutes only to lead to his death on the computer monitor. Was following him for so long entirely necessary? Throw in some ridiculous detectives and a silly plot twist at the end, and you’ve got yet another pointless remake.
A potentially decent film had it not been riddled with plot holes. To make matters worse, we’re delivered a silly ending that doesn’t even make much sense. Watch at your own risk.
