Bloody Reunion
Bloody Reunion is a Korean horror flick that attempts to take the slasher formula and combine it with a little twist action, Shyamalan style. The end result is a little undesirable and the film never takes the necessary step to become truly great and transcend the realm of mediocre slasher flick.
In Bloody Reunion, a group of students meet to celebrate their teacher, who is becoming ill. They drink and make merry and things are generally going fine, until the students start remembering the horrible things that the teacher did to them when they were young. Not Michael Jackson type horrible things, but the typical mental abuse and cold-hearted treatment that most people experience at the hands of a teacher… or Alec Baldwin. Night falls and after a drunken outburst from one of the students, everyone retires to their own personal psychoses and a killer in a bunny mask starts making people disappear. The plot is bookended between two expository scenes showing the survivors of the bloody night and ruining any hope for originality that the film might have as it gives away who lives and much more.
The film is directed by newcomer Dae Wung-lim. Wung-lim’s film is poorly filmed and there are a few scenes that are just outright bad. Wung-lim seems unable to capture a night scene without a little digital distortion, as there are many scenes where things that are supposed to be in shadow show up as a red glare. The editing is also a little faulty and clipped in a few scenes. Wung-lim’s attempts at being horrifying and over the top start off well, but by the last half hour of the film, it is clear that he doesn’t have the stomach to compete with today’s over the top gore as he pusses out pretty hard near the end of the film. Overall, what starts out as a fun horror thrill ride filled with grudges, turns into a lame, twist-ruined slasher of bland sensibilities and ball-less execution.
The special effects are outstanding in the first half of the film, but as the film drags on, gore is traded in for lame exposition and your typical stabbings and shit like that. It’s a shame because the special effects are the best part of the film. The originality of the kills also degrades severely.
Bloody Reunion is an excellent idea (even though I feel like I’ve seen this scenario before), but the execution leaves a little to be desired. Rather than bring anything original to the genre, the director attempts to combine elements of two different types of horror sub-genres, the slasher flick and the twist killer flick. The final result is weak due to the fact that the film peters out and the twist is ruined by a biased perspective and a lack of guts.
Final Synopsis: The film isn’t terrible, but it offers nothing original or entertaining beyond the first half of the film. The twist is weak and unwanted and the technical proficiency of the director is questionable. It’s not the worst film I’ve ever seen, but I could have easily skipped this one. I recommend you skip it.
