Beneath Still Waters
Beneath Still Waters is the latest film from the interminably hit or miss Brian Yuzna. This film is one of Yuzna’s Spanish productions, which seem to always have a little bit more polish to them than the American variety of Yuzna movie. Despite Yuzna’s disappointing track record (Return of the Living Dead 3, Rhottweiler and numerous other direct-to-video torturefests), this movie actually turned out to be a little bit of a surprise. It is definitely one of his better films. Maybe one day Yuzna will get some real money and we can actually see what he can do behind a monitor.
The story of Beneath Still Waters goes like this: Once there was a town that was buried when a dam was built in the vicinity. It turns out that some devil worshippers were living there and they were buried in the flood of water that was created when the dam was built. 40 years later, bad things start happening… disappearance and the like. The story plays out well and is actually rather satisfying.
This movie has the feel of an 80’s movie. The look is not supremely polished and it has the somewhat grainy movie of European horror from the 80’s. The tone and pacing of this film are two of its high points. I never found myself looking at the DVD timer to see how much of the movie was left… and that I s a good thing. The movie plays out as a serious horror film, light on humor but strong on gore.
The acting, for the most part, is top notch. All of the principal characters are enjoyable to watch and the women of this movie are beautiful. The only stumbling block concerning the acting is with the supporting cast. The accents on the surrounding cast are so thick that in places I had to go back just to hear what they were saying. I can overlook this though, because a good majority of those hot foreign chicks that butcher the English language manage to take their clothes of in the end of the movie.
My favorite part of this movie was the gore. I saw a child get his head ripped off. I saw a cop carving up his own legs, and there were some sweet bite scenes. The movie doesn’t need the gore, the story is strong enough, but it certainly is nice to have.
The end of the movie was fantastic if a little perplexing. I almost want to watch it again… but I’m afraid I’ll find some Yuzna-flaws.
Final Synopsis: This movie is a quality horror film with boobs and blood. I definitely recommend this movie to Yuzna fans. Not everyone will be pleased with this movie though. I recommend a rent of this thing… and if you can’t stand Europeans butchering the English language then you might want to stay away… there were still a couple of parts I couldn’t figure out.
