Paranoia 1.0 Review

Paranoia: 1.0 is a fantastic and under-appreciated movie that slides easily into the pantheon of great Cyberpunk movies. The movie stars Jeremy Sisto (May, Julius Caesar, Wrong Turn), Udo Kier, and Lance Henriksen. Jeremy Sisto gives a quality performance as the main character, Simon. His performance is subtle and multi-textured. He definitely sells the film, which is good since he is one of the producers of it.

The plot of this film is what really pushes this film over the top, in my opinion. The film takes place in a gritty, rundown apartment complex populated by eccentric loners. At first, I didn’t know exactly what was going on, but the plot unfolds beautifully. Simon begins to receive packages from an unknown source. This sets the whole plot in motion and soon our protagonist develops symptoms of paranoia, obsessive behaviors, and a worsening physical condition. Eventually, these symptoms spread to the rest of the residents of this apartment complex.

The cinematography is excellent. The makers of this film were able to do a lot with what was, obviously, a low budget. The lighting in this movie is excellent. Shadows are used in an admirable way. They are always present but never so dark as to obscure anything.

The best thing about this movie is that it actually treats you like you have a brain. There are no blatant exposition scenes where the plot has to be told to you. An intelligent person can figure out what is going on with the clues that are provided. This is a rare thing in today’s cinema, when every movie is created to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I was intrigued by the visuals and the characters throughout the movie.

I would recommend this movie to almost anyone that knows anything about technology or enjoys a good mystery.

Final Synopsis: Nature Fresh Milk… this movie is enjoyable and makes you think. There is some disturbing imagery and a subtle, but effective, amount of gore. Jeremy Sisto is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors. Udo Kier is always creepy… Nature Fresh Milk.
