The Mad
The Mad is another entry into one of the quickest growing subgenres of horror, the dreaded zombie comedy. It is clear that with this arrival, the zombie comedy genre is now officially flooded. When low budget crap like this gets made it’s just a sad day. I curse Shaun of the Dead for being so funny that everyone that’s ever told a knock knock joke thinks they can go out and make their own independent zombie comedy. For anyone that has this idea in their head… please watch this movie and realize that you can’t. It’s too late for the creators of The Mad, but hopefully I can save someone the embarrassment.
The plot of the mad goes something like this: Some meat gets infected… people start eating it and turn into zombies. Not original, I seem to recall a little movie by the name of Dead Meat that had the same type of thing going for it. In addition to not being original, it is also not well executed. It doesn’t really matter what the plot is because it gets sidetracked so many times. Half the time it’s about a father and daughter bickering over who is lamer, the other half it seems to be about how to make someone appear rednecky.
The acting in this film is garbage… I’ve seen better casts in Troma films. To top it all off, the main character in this film is Billy Zane… the king of unlikable actors. Billy Zane stumbles his way through this movie just like he does all of his other movies… only this time it’s worse because he is trying to deliver a deadpan comedy performance, which he clearly has no idea of how to do.
The comedy in this film is truly annoying. There is nothing to laugh at hear except for bad filmmaking and elementary school quality humor… I’d say middle school, but there were no fart jokes.
The look of the movie is very unprofessional and cheesy. It’s not the worst I’ve ever seen, but the imagery isn’t going to distract you from the fact that you are watching a shitty zombie comedy.
The gore in this film is minimal at best. What is present is nothing more than chunks of red being carved on. There are a few bullet holes and some bites, but nothing that is going to truly stick out in your mind. The zombies are ok, but not really threatening… the filmmaker spends too much of his time focusing on father daughter dynamics to take stock of the zombie apocalypse.
In the end, I have one thing to say… if you’re going to make a zombie comedy, you had better get at least one part of it right. As it is, The Mad does neither the comedy nor the zombie correctly and isn’t worth wasting any of your time on.
Final Synopsis: It sucks. Don’t be fooled by the trailer for this thing, which makes it look good. If you like zombies, you may want to check this out… probably not though. Everyone else should probably stay away.
