Bride of Chucky
This may be hard to believe, but “Bride of Chucky” is a smart little horror movie. The fourth installment in the “Child’s Play” series has a sense of its own silliness — and a tight plot that provides a clothesline for a string of funny, macabre murders.
Chucky, lest we forget, is a doll animated by the spirit of a killer. At the start, Jennifer Tilly, playing yet another of her girly-girl psychopaths, steals the broken doll from police headquarters and brings back the evil spirit with the help of a book: “Voodoo for Dummies.”
Soon she’s offed but comes back as a female doll. Among the film’s many gruesome sights is a scene of doll sex: “Do I have a rubber?!” he says, outraged. “Look at me. I am rubber.”
Tilly (as the voice of the bride) and Brad Dourif (as the voice of Chucky) play it full tilt, and the dolls are both chilling to look at and absurd — the right combination.
The most imaginative element is the story: Chucky and bride are riding in a car with two young people who are eloping. Unknown to the couple, the dolls kill everybody who tries to prevent the young people from running off.
The result is that the lovers suspect each other, while the authorities are convinced that the pair are serial killers.
No one will confuse “Bride of Chucky” with a classic like “Bride of Frankenstein,” but anyone looking for nasty laughs will be delighted.
