Red Room
Red Room is a strange little Japanese film that takes a solid premise and then spews tons of softcore porn action on top. None of it is titillating or easy to stomach; however, as most of the acts are depraved and end in pain for at least one of the participants. The film centers on four contestants as they compete in a sadistic gameshow for the privilege to win 10,000,000 Yen… sounds like a lot, but it’s really only around $100,000. The game is played in rounds and each contestant gets a card. Whoever gets the king card gets to make the other contestants do whatever they want. If a contestant is unable to accomplish the challenge or they are unwilling to do the challenge, then they are disqualified. Of course, the challenges begin to escalate rather quickly in the film and what starts out as simple slapping and hitting turns into light bulb insertions and rapes.
The film takes advantage of its low-budget with confined spaces and character driven action. There are really only two sets in the film, and I’m pretty sure they are in the same place, just with different dressing. The action in the film is satisfyingly disturbing and there some hefty surprises as well as some fairly gross scenes. The film never goes overboard and into the completely explicit zone, but the stuff that is inferred is enough to be sufficiently disturbing.
Daisuke Yamanouchi does a wonderful job of creating a sick masterpiece on what looks like a budget of five dollars. For anyone out there trying to make a low-budget film to get started in the biz, Yamanouchi’s film is a textbook example of how to succeed on a minuscule budget. Few will go wrong by crafting a disturbing character driven set piece filled with busted taboos and unflinching honesty. Really, the stuff that happens in the film is exactly the type of crap I would imagine most people doing to each other given the opportunity. The imagery is bleak and some of it has a cheap look to it, but Yamanouchi more than makes up for the sparsity of the sets with multiple angles and camera views and some fun timeline play.
The special effects in the film are a little lacking and much of the gore is left up to the imagination of the viewer. There are plenty of chesticles to go around and the exploitive nature of the film is accompanied by a stomach churning orchestra of squishy sounds. Seriously, if it sounded like that when I was fucking, I don’t think I could go through with it… well, maybe not all the time. During most of the sex scenes it sounds like someone is pulling a gravy boat free of some thick mud. There is some gore, but none of it looks particularly well.
Red Room is a trashy good time. If you like your films a little sleazy, a little perverted, and with a whole lot of squishy sounds, then Red Room is the movie for you. I wish I could give away some of the surprises of the film as there is so much to talk about and to laugh about in the film, but I don’t want to ruin the joy of this sadly short movie. The biggest flaw of the film is that it only clocks in at around an hour and five minutes.
Final Synopsis: If you like a little exploitation in your films, then Red Room is perfect. It strikes the balance between being uncomfortable and being overtly disgusting perfectly. If you’re a sick fuck and enjoy dirty sexual shit, give it a try. This isn’t a porno though. It’s mostly just boobs and squishy sounds. Give it a rent.
