Mind Slime

Mind Slime is a short film from director Henry Weintraub. The short film packs a lot of punch for only being around twenty minutes long, and by the time the film ends, I was eagerly wanting more. The film is about a guy that gets taken over by an alien that has a lust for human meat and blow jobs. The unlucky schlub who find himself possessed by a horny alien can’t do much about it as the alien is able to take control of his body at will. The film is basically a night in the life of this poor dude as he tools around town fighting the new voice in his brain and getting into shitty situations.

Weintraub definitely has some skill in the directing department. There are a few iconic images and the gore in the film is top notch… I might even add, revolting. Weintraub also has some talent in blending the horror genre and the comedic, as I was laughing throughout the film due to the film’s offbeat and perverted humor. The film suffers from some pacing errors, and scenes where the alien and the host are talking feel a little forced. It’s a shame to see this part of the film look so visually bland, as the rest of the film is a joy to look at. Something more creative than staring at a dude’s face while he listens to a disembodied voice would have been better and more in line with the rest of the film.

The acting in the film is nothing to write home about. There are a few moments of brilliance from the tiny cast, but each actor also has their moment of amateurish acting… but for a low-budget short film, it’s pretty much par for the course. I do however question the choice of the annoying voice that Skeeter affected throughout the film. I varied from liking it to finding it annoying in several scenes. I’m not sure what it adds to the film, and I still can’t quite decide if I love it or hate it.

As far as short films go, this is my criterion for deciding whether it was good or not: “Would I want to see a full version of this?” The answer is “yes.” The gore and the story are fun and interesting and when blended with the bawdy humor the film is hilarious and memorable. I was never bored during the film, and I just wish that there was more of this to see. Some variation in the killing would be nice… as well as some clarification on the deaths of a few characters. The end of the movie is a nice conclusion that is as humorous as it is fitting with the rest of the film.

Final Synopsis: Mind Slime is a fun film that reminds me of a Troma flick, only with a little more polish and some better humor. The film straddles the line between cheesy and respectable, but with a few iconic images and some creativity, it never gets unbearably cheesy. It’s definitely a fun time and worth a watch.
