Feast
Feast is the bastard child of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s show Project Greenlight. Feast was the subject of the third season… and despite all of the meddling reality TV that surrounded the film it actually turned out to be one of the better horror films from 2006.
The film is about a group of strangers who all find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. All of your typical horror stereotypes are represented, from the loser to the badass hero. Soon the characters are besieged by a family of horny and hungry monsters. They must band together to fight the monsters or they will never survive the night. It’s sounds like your typical horror movie plot, but it isn’t. The humor with which first-time director infuses his movie pokes fun at all of the genre clichés, challenging the viewer to participate in a willful crushing of those rules. The film is more funny than it is horror, but there is a good blend of both genres.
John Gulager’s visual style is very distinctive, from simple shots of a shot glass smashing into an ant to complex shots of monster vomit covering a hapless victim, the film pops with crisp visuals, horror in jokes, and plain old nasty fun. Gulager’s pacing is relentless as the film offers very few moments to catch one’s breath… and the moments he does offer are frequently profanity laced tirades or gross out visuals… basically it’s like the movie was made for horror fans and not the pathetically stupid homogenous crowd that movie executives imagine are going to be watching every movie ever made.
The cast of Feast is amazing. Clu Gulager (Return of the Living Dead), John Gulager’s father, makes an appearance as a crusty old cowboy bartender. Henry Rollins (ex-lead singer of Black Flag, Johnny Mnemonic), plays Coach, a motivational speaker that is as funny as he is motivational. My favorite that guy, Balthazar Getty (Deuces Wild, Young Guns II) plays the village idiot, a pool hustler that seems to draw the ire of the entire bar. Judah Friedlander, Jason Mewes, and Jenny Wade all add interesting performances to the cast.
The only real weak link in the cast is Navi Rawat, who plays the Heroine. Rawat’s performance is overacted and supremely out of place next to the professional performances of the rest of the cast. She seems like an amateur and is obviously out of her league in this movie. Plus, her voice sounds like she is gargling a cock when she talks.
Feast is old fashioned fun, filled with gross out humor, buckets of spraying blood and vomit, and even a good old fashioned monster castration. If that doesn’t pique your interest I don’t know what else will. The special effects are outstanding and are some of the best in the genre. While they aren’t overly realistic, some of the effects are enough to make you cringe.
Feast may not have been the most heralded movie to come out in 2006, but it will probably one of the view horror movies that manages to maintain an audience and not disappear into bargain bins. It’s definitely on the cult classic radar.
Final Synopsis: I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like this movie or at least get some entertainment out of watching it… and I don’t want to know anyone who didn’t like it. Give it a watch. If you’re a horror fan, it’s a must own.
