Sublime
Sublime is one of those topical horror movies that tries to be relevant and pertinent to the times but fails miserably due to its own preachiness and self-righteousness. The film is about the bizarre journey of a man named George who goes into the hospital for a routine colonoscopy… don’t ask me what that is; I think it involves tubes, an anus, and scraping. Let’s just say things go wrong and strange shit starts to happen.
The director has created one of those movies where you’re wondering “What the fuck is going on?” the whole time. The film plays around with the linear narrative format, jumping from the past to the present in a willy nilly fashion that is designed to disorient the viewer, which it does masterfully. The whole process is intriguing enough to make the movie interesting, until you get to the end of the film, when you’ll be sitting there saying, “That’s what all this shit was about?” It was quite a disappointment. I would equate it to finding the most mysterious and interesting girl of your dreams and when you’re finally about to do the deed, you find out that her vagina is covered in flies and brown rot.
The acting in the film is ok. Tom Cavanagh is excellent as George, the protagonist. If it wasn’t for him the film wouldn’t work as well as it did, which still wasn’t that great. The rest of the cast is ok, but there is virtual nothing interesting going on with any of the other characters except for visual stuff… which is mostly the job of the visual effects department.
The film is kind of boring in the pacing area of the film. For the first hour of the movie, I had to fight off sleep because nothing happened and the film is shrouded in a dry, melodrama seal that keeps any semblance of energy and excitement from infiltrating the movie. The second half of the film picks up as it gets more and more bizarre… but who really cares when the end of the movie makes it apparent that everything you are watching is a gigantic waste of time.
The message of the film is decidedly droll. This is compounded by the fact that the film tries to convince the viewer through a conglomeration of a racist monologue, pointless violence, and hamfisted idealism. Seriously, I don’t need a black man named Mandingo (Yes, this happens in the movie.) to explain the film to me. I think that one scene is a major step backwards for the film thematically and that it is hard to sell as necessary or constructive.
Overall, Sublime seems to be the pet project of a few idealists who are trying to trick people into accepting the film’s agenda. It doesn’t work and it wastes the technical proficiency of the movie… it’s not so much horror as it is annoying… like goth kids.
Final Synopsis: Sublime is a movie that has its moments, but the overall experience is just plain unenjoyable. I definitely recommend that everyone skip this… try and give yourself a colonoscopy instead.
