Silent Hill Review

Few movies based on video games come anywhere close to the quality of Silent Hill. In fact, only one comes to mind. No Uwe Boll, I am not talking about any of your butt plug romps.

The trailer for this movie set my hopes pretty high, and I did not feel let down. Visually, this is a work of beauty. The monster and creature effects are very eerie and disturbing. The CGI is for the most part very well done (although aided by much of the dark lighting), and the violence realistic and fun.

Having not played the games I cannot comment on how closely the film compares, but I have heard that it was not very close to the game’s storylines. Though I don’t think it matters. The story for this film was dark enough and original enough for me to have overlooked a departure from the game.

The movie is not all strong however. You cannot make an entire film based entirely on visuals (unless you are Salvador Dali). Acting is still a base of any film production, and a piece of the puzzle that seems to have fallen far from the table top. I like a hot busty cop as much as the next guy. And ya I wanted to grease her insides with man juice. But Laurie Holden’s acting made me shake my head in disappointment.

Laurie was not the only low performance. Despite her very well acted and creepy ghost role, Jodelle Ferland was atrocious when she wasn’t in ghosty makeup. I mean Dakota Fanning bad. I am beginning to agree with Vocab, children do not belong in movies. I think I will have to append the following to his comment though: unless being run over by semi’s and cutting peoples achilles tendons with scalpels.

For a horror movie I found this one refreshing. It wasn’t the basic hack’n slash formula Hollywood has grown to love and use for its abuse and victimization of women. It was visually different and not so over the top that it would oppose most viewers. Content wise however, it might be rather affronting to many.

Overall Impression: Very entertaining. Visually orgasmic. The story and special effects are enough to overshadow the low grade acting.

Recommendation: See this when you get the chance. If you like horror movies you will probably enjoy this one at least a little bit.
