Few movies capture the feeling i strive to experience when i go to the theater. But the most frequent contributor tends to be horror movies. Dead Silence happens to be one of those horror movies. What did it possess that so few others lack?

1) Creative Story - Even though the premise is a cheesy ghost story about a woman who murders from beyond the grave, it featured a complex version of the standard slasher film and/or Japanese ghosty shit. It was a unique telling of an age old ritualistic ghost story.
2) Unpredictability - Complete gerbil on a wheel. It gives little bits of information that make the viewer just curious enough to maintain interest in the story without beign able to figure out every little detail.
3) Anti-Hollywood Ending - I dont believe in spoilers. So my explanation on this is that they opted away from the ‘expected’ outcome. By that i mean both the happy and the sad endings of typical Hollywood trash. This was unique enough in my eyes to be special.

This film advertised ties to SAW. Watching it reminded me much of that very film. The violence was not over the top, and felt very necessary to the story. The cinematography was very grainy gray/blue and had a very industrial feel despite taking place, for the most part, in a rural town.

Wahlberg’s role was very flacid. He reprised the detective role he gave in SAW II. Different character name, same character. Fortunately he was not in the film very much and did not pull too much away from the rest of the movie.

I also have to give extra points for having a nearly entirely unknown cast to draw upon for talent. Though not all the acting was superb, i find it refreshing to see new faces. There is something about a recognizable face that pulls away from the immersion of a film.

Overall Impression: Not exactly the greatest film ever made, but definately entertaining enough to spend money on. Gritty, old school horror film that doesnt lose its balls. This is a film that demonstrates how most films, not just horror, should be made. There was a lot of intelligence thrown into an otherwise shitty story.

Recommendation: Don’t let anyone spoil this one. See it before some dumbass ruins it.
