Wages of Sin
Wages of Sin is a crappy straight to DVD horror movie that is equal parts ghost story and equal parts annoying. The story is about an adopted girl that inherits a house from her biological family, who she hasn’t seen since she was nine years old. In order to reconcile her past and put it behind her, the girl and her three buddies journey to the house for a weekend. Once there, strange shit starts happening… and the ghosts of the past come to life. It’s your typical “mysterious past” ghost story… complete with flashbacks, hallucinations and Ouija board enabled possessions… seriously this is the third Ouija board enabled possession flick that I have seen in the past three months. Shitty directors everywhere! Stop using Ouija boards!
The direction in this film is ok visually… there are some ok scenes… and a few creative shots that are mildly disturbing and/or creepy. However, Aaron Robson’s skill falls apart when it comes to pacing and storytelling. The majority of the film is a waste of visions, pointless partying, and bible quotes. When the story does pick up, one hour into the movie, it completely falls apart, and in true low-budget, ghost story style it becomes semi-unintelligible and confusing.
The acting in the film is terrible. Ashlie Clark plays Sue, a girl with a cloudy past. Clark’s performance isn’t “turn it off” terrible, but it’s nothing to write home about either. Maybe if director Robson had stopped to do some extra takes, she could have pulled off the part, but he didn’t and she doesn’t. The worst member of the cast is, by far, Brandon Michael, who plays Sue’s boyfriend… even though he would probably be better off playing some dude’s boyfriend. The guy looks like the George Michael looking dude from 90’s crap group, Color Me Bad… and he talks with one of the more pronounced lisps that I have been exposed to in recent history. Add to that the fact that he looks like he’s going to cry in every scene, his shitty, “just woke up” pageboy haircut, and the fact that he delivers all of his lines like a sexually abused altar boy and you have one of the most irritating actors and performances on the face of the planet.
It’s not all bad though, I have to give kudos to Prentice Reedy who turned in a fantastic performance as the Napoleon Dynamite like stoner Taylor. Reedy definitely has some sort of skill, it’s just too bad that later in the movie he gets possessed and turns into a boring character.
The ghost story in the movie is just plain dumb and annoying. The ghost is the crazy spirit of Sue’s grandfather, played by Billy St. John. He spouts bible quotes throughout the film… whether they fit or not. Seriously, my brain shut down after the third quote or so. Very boring, very bland… kind of like how I imagine sex with Martha Stewart would be… but at least she’s give you some cookies in the morning and maybe some of her white collar criminal earnings.
Wages of Sin is a small budget flick that tries… it really does; the filmmakers just don’t have the skill or the resources to pull this film off… and there’s no nudity and very little gore. Booo!
Final Synopsis: This movie pretty much sucks… if you’re into low budget ghost movies, you might get a small kick out of it. Everyone else should avoid this like clam chowder prepared by a sex criminal.
