Borderline Cult
Borderline Cult is another Ulli Lommel film… wait! Where are you going? At least stick around and read the review! Otherwise, I watched this stinker for nothing. Yes, Borderline Cult is another movie churned out of Lommel’s eastern block film school, where you get a bunch of chicks, kill them with poor special effects, and call it a movie. All the requisite Lommel staples are here including: poor writing, bad acting, repetitive scenes of torture, lack of plot, and boring recycled footage throughout.
The plot of Borderline Cult is actually pretty interesting and not the usual stuff that Lommel’s retard farm usually pumps out. Three serial killers get together to combine forces and turn themselves into serial killer legends. They do this at some shitty ranch in the desert… which is supposed to be in Mexico, but I’m pretty sure it’s in California, because Lommel is on the old Weapons of Mass Destruction List and if he went into any other country than America it could be the start of World War III.
Lommel once again proves that he is the master of filming twenty minutes of footage and handing it to his slave editor XGIN (who still isn’t telling everyone his real name) to turn it into eighty minutes. Lommel’s footage is repetitive as the editing splices up the same image and introduces lame sound effects to re-use the same lines of dialogue over and over. The visuals are typically bland and Lommel once again goes for the arthouse approach rather than his typical standby of broken narrative storytelling… I can’t tell which he is worse at.
The acting in the film is garbage. None of the characters are interesting… and uhhh, all they do is lure eight or nine girls to a ranch, kill them, and bury them. Not much opportunity to act in any of that. I wonder if this choice was a result of having bad actors or Lommel just plain being a bad writer. All of the girls that are killed are similar in appearance and mannerisms… they’re just there to be stupid, scream, and get killed.
This film is a cheap piece of genre exploitation. Once again, Lommel relies on the fact that a lot of horror fans are blithering idiots and will be lured in by a cool cover and an awesome two sentence synopsis of the movie. Spread the word! Don’t watch this shit… and make sure that everyone you know is aware of how terrible a director Ulli Lommel actually is.
I have now watched 400 minutes of Lommel film this year… I am starting to question my sanity and my physical health… if I have to watch one more, I’m going to go fucking crazy. Fuck you Lommel… and fuck any horror fans that have ever given this guy any of their money. Be alert! Be aware! Lommel is a sneaky bastard, who apparently is in cahoots with a kickass art department. Don’t be tricked, it may be the last thing you ever do.
Final Synopsis: This movie is a giant hill of shit covered in beetles and maggots. Don’t watch it… it may make you sterile.
