The Deaths of Ian Stone

Originally released as part of After Dark Film’s “8 Films to Die For” lineup in November, the film seemed to be the standout among the rest of the low-budget and likely horrible releases. The movie had two qualities that most of the films in the lineup didn’t have: an original premise and a decent-sized budget.

In the flick we follow Ian Stone (Mike Vogel) an American living in London, who goes through each day being mercilessly hunted down and killed by mysterious creatures known as “harvesters”. We pick up where Ian is beginning to realize what’s happening to him and after each death, more of the truth is revealed. We later learn that these “harvesters” are demons of sorts that feed off of the fear of people, and supposedly the fear before death gives them a high that can’t be beat, eventually leading them to murder their victims — something once thought to be taboo among their kind. At one point Ian found a way to “hurt” them, and now he’s forced to pay the price by living and dying each day.

As I said before, the movie offers a fairly original premise (a rarity in this genre) and actually had some decent production values behind it. There were some clear inspirations from the Matrix films, especially towards the end, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but the similarities could have been done without. There’s a decent amount of blood, but not much in terms of gore. The film’s an interesting watch from the start and although the climax got a little cheesy, it wasn’t a big letdown like other potentially good horror films.

Interesting from start-to-finish and the movie shows that the genre still has some originality left in it. Worth a check.
