Night of the Demons

Ah yes, Night of the Demons — the definitive cheesy 80’s demon horror flick. Sure there was the Evil Dead movies, but this is pure 80’s trash, but in a good way! This is a film that successfully combines horny “teens”, booze, and demons into one. Before this the theaters were overrun by the same-old teen slashers, but then a movie like this comes along and kicks them all in the balls. Not only did it take a bite outta the box office; doubling its budget. Yes, fans and official critics-alike were fond of this little gem and even yours truly took a shine to it after viewing the unrated VHS as a young up-and-coming horror aficionado. I knew that one day I would get it on DVD, and thanks to the re-release that became a reality.

So the story is about a varied group of teens who all meet up in a supposedly haunted house called “Hull House” hosted by an Elvira-wannabe named Angela. About 40-minutes of boozing and sexing eventually leads to a demon or demons finding their way out of the furnace and possessing each and every one of the teens. Add some snazzy make-up effects, lots of gore, and cool-looking demons and you’ve got yourself a sweet 80’s cheese-fest that would be ranked as one of the best demon-related films in many horror fans’ lists.

The movie spawned two more sequels, the first in ‘94 with a different writer and director and the second in ‘97 with another director, but original writer Kevin Tenney back with the script. Of course the sequels don’t match up to this, but they are still an enjoyable ride if you’re a big fan of the first. Actress Amelia Kinkade returns as Angela in all three movies, but that might be due to the fact that she has no other offers. B-movie scream queen Linnea Quigley plays the usual role as the slutty chick that eventually gets naked at one point or the other. Although the movie is a bit slow the first 40-minutes with nothing much going on aside from watching the characters “party” it does kick into high gear when the demons start poppin’ up. Ignore all the clichés and just sit back and enjoy the ride; you might be surprised.
